Bassenthwaite Lake From Kestrel Lodge - The Direct Route
A nice easy flat walk to the lake, and as direct as you can, just under 2 miles each way.
Go out of the campsite at the metal gate at the top, cross the field to the hedge and turn right. Go through a gate then turn right and walk straight down this field to the next gate. You just keep walking straight until you get to the village green. At the end of the village green turn left and follow this road passed the village Hall and school to the main A591 road.
Cross the A591 and keep to the road until you see a footpath sign and gate on your right hand side. Go through the gate and follow the path up and over the rise. At the top of the hill you’ll see a gate on your left walk through the gate and follow the path through the next gate.
The path then feels line it is going through someone’s garden until you meet a tarmac road. Turn left on this un-adopted road until you see the entrance to a Caravan Park. Just before this entrance on your right there is a footpath sign, this path goes through a small wood to the lake.
You can now access the lake and take a little walk to the left where you’ll find a grassy area and bench for a picnic. This is also the area where we access the lake for a swim.
When returning simply re-trace your steps back to the village, for an alternative route back through the woods at the village green go through the village and passed the Sun Inn.
Cross the bridge turn left and first right up The Rake. After about a hundred meters or so on the right you’ll see a footpath sign and gate. Follow this footpath up and through the woods. The path goes down to a clearing where you can see the road – either turn to the road and turn left on the road until you see a footpath sign on your right. Follow this path over the bridge and to the left, over 3 fields back to kestrel Lodge.
Go straight up through the woods until you see the footpath down this will bring you to the road which you simply cross, go down and over the bridge before following the path back to Kestrel lodge.
